"Variscite and turquoise are sometimes found within the same geographic areas. They also can have a similar appearance in the rough or when cut into cabochons. As a result there has been some confusion, with variscite sometimes being identified as the more common and familiar turquoise. The name "variquoise" is sometimes used for rough and cabochons of questionable identity."
Well, this lovely piece of variquoise is questionable only because it wasn't specifically labeled by the lapidary artist who cut and polished it, my grandfather. What is certain however, is that it was mined from either Utah or Nevada, USA.
